Camping with a baby might sound like a challenge, but it’s totally doable—and even fun! With the right preparation, you can introduce your little one to the great outdoors without stress. Here are some tried-and-tested tips to make your first camping trip with a baby a success.
Stay Close to Home - (to start off)
For your first camping trip with a baby, pick a site that’s not too far from home. That way, if things don’t go as planned, you can pack up and leave without a long drive. Having nearby amenities, like a small town or a campground with facilities, can also make the experience smoother. Our first trip had a little convenient store at the camp itself.
Keep It Short, but Not Too Short
A two-night trip is ideal for a first-time adventure. It gives you enough time to settle in, enjoy the experience, and pack up without feeling rushed.
Keep It Convenient
While off-the-grid camping is great, having access to essentials like running water, toilets, and picnic tables can make things much easier when you have a baby in tow. Look for free camp spots that have amenities but also give you a little freedom on where to put your tent - that way you can be stationed a little away from any close neighbours.
Don’t Skimp on the Sleeping Situation
A comfortable sleeping setup is a must! Bring a good-quality air mattress, a warm sleeping bag, and a waterproof pad for diaper leaks. Bring extra layers for the night - even if its a warm season. The weather changes constantly and often makes it unexpected. Don’t forget to bring something familiar for their sleep routine whether its a dummy or a lovey.
Feed Frequently
Babies can get dehydrated quickly, so if you’re breastfeeding, offer feeds more often than usual. If using formula, pack extra supplies and something quick to sanitize bottles, whether its sterilize tablets or a portable sterilizer. We also found a collapsible kettle was helpful when boiling the water, as it made it convenient and good for storage.
Pack Plenty of Nappies
Bring more nappies than you think you’ll need. Having a developed campground with trash bins can make nappy disposal easier. Also pack your nappy rash creams, hotter climates can cause some unsettling nappy rush for bubs. Make sure to pack disposable or a travel change, and whatever you do, do NOT change your babies nappy on your bed with your only blanket! Speaking from experience...
Pack Plenty of Layers
Babies can’t regulate their temperature well, so layering is key. Pack onesies, socks, hats, and fleece jackets for warmth. A wearable sleep sack is great for chilly nights.
Bring a Safe and Comfortable Spot for Your Baby to Sit and Sleep During the Day
A stroller with a recline feature or a baby carrier works well for naps and keeping your baby comfortable at camp. You could even treat yourself to a pop-up playpen to keep you hands free and have a safe spot for your little one.
Bring a Bag of “Just in Case” Toiletries
Pack a basic baby first-aid kit with essentials like nappy cream, baby wipes, and a nasal aspirator.
Bring a “Nightlight”
A small, dimmable camping lantern can provide gentle light for nighttime feedings and nappy changes without being too bright.
Take It Easy on Yourself
Camping with a baby is an adventure! Expect things to go differently than planned, and focus on having fun rather than perfection.
Hope those tips help you and your bub/s get outdoors!
